Choosing the wrong fixture for your bathroom or kitchen redo can make or break the finished product. Luckily, Nate Berkus has a few key tips to ensure that you get the fixtures right every time.

In an Instagram video made in collaboration with DXV Luxury Kitchen & Bath, Berkus notes that the top two things you need to think about when picking a plumbing fixture is the shape and finish.

“Consider the shape of the actual faucet and all the plumbing fixtures and make sure it has some reference back to the architecture of your space,” Berkus says. A modern-looking tap in a room with tons of character, for example, could throw the whole aesthetic out of whack if you haven’t worked modern lines into other aspects of the room.

He continues, “For a kitchen, a single gooseneck faucet with a pull-down is actually one of the best, easiest faucets to clean and looks the cleanest.” It blends in rather than stands out.

Finally, Berkus says it’s okay to mix finishes within your home. “The finish is actually really important,” he goes on. “Even if you have chrome or nickel in your kitchen, you can still change to brass or bronze or black in your bathroom. Just make sure it’s consistent.”

If you follow Berkus’ three fixture tips, your next bathroom or kitchen remodel will look *that* much better and look as though the fixtures have been there all along.
