Alex and Alicia Savin weren’t seriously looking for a new home when they stumbled on this one for sale. Alicia, who is the creative director and owner of her own interior design business, Alicia Savin by Design, had just given birth to their second son, so they were considering a larger space. They instantly fell in love with this 1600(ish)-square-foot house in North Vancouver, British Columbia. But so did a bunch of other people. They would have to put all their savings toward the purchase to win the bidding war, but knew with Vancouver’s rapidly rising home prices that they’d likely never be able to afford a home like this in the future.

They’ve never regretted the purchase. “It has a unique ‘upside down’ (or at least that’s what we call it) layout, with bedrooms on the lower level, and I love this because the term fits our unconventional family perfectly,” Alicia begins of the house they bought 10 years ago and now share with sons, 13-year-old Jack and 10-year-old Ben, and their pet hamster, Taco.

"When we ripped up the carpet, there was old black and white checkerboard tile. As I wanted to thank the home and respect its original roots, I put it back in. It’s SO cold on the feet, but it’s badass, looks great, and since checkerboard is apparently trending, this means I am trending and therefore cool. Side note: I despise trends."

Two years ago, the family returned from a trip to find their entire lower level flooded. “I had always dreamed of (and still do!) of having a house with a pool — just not an indoor one,” Alicia admits. “Vancouver experienced an unusually cold winter that year, and despite having the heat on, the outdated plumbing in our downstairs bathroom, which was on an exterior wall, failed in three places.”

“We considered tearing it down after the flood but chose to preserve it because we LOVE older homes and the stories they hold. It comfortably accommodates our family of four (five with Taco) and will continue to serve us well when our sons eventually leave,” she explains.

She also says they could have just renovated the flooded first level, “but past experiences with electrical issues and outdated plumbing throughout the home convinced us that a more comprehensive approach was needed. After a very serious discussion, Alex and I chose to invest significantly in renovating the entire interior of our home to make it exactly as we envisioned.”

“The renovation process was initially estimated to take a year but ended up stretching to nearly 18 months due to delays with permitting. The budget started at $450,000 but ultimately soared to around $750,000 due to numerous unforeseen issues such as framing, leveling, and bringing everything up to code. Hello, the joys of renovating an older home!” Alicia admits.

"To add a striking finish, I opted for a high-gloss paint, which really makes the color pop," Alicia explains of the staircase. "Admittedly, the glossy surface has led to a few slips (you feel VERY alive after you tumble down that sucker) but for me, beauty often takes precedence over practicality (sorry, not sorry), and the bruised bum is always worth it."

“We have no intention of ever selling this home, as it holds too much love and significance for us. Alex and I plan to pass it along to our sons, as there is no way in hell they will ever be able to afford a home in Vancouver otherwise.”

PRIMARY BEDROOM

"I made sure the bed was high enough off the ground because this son likes to collect all sorts of shit, which I can conveniently hide (shove) under his bed when guests come over. I also love the wallpaper as it's both hilarious and has a great food theme which ties everything together," Alicia writes.

FRY BEDROOM

"I'm not really a DIY kind of gal," Alicia admits. "Although I designed various projects for the home you could make DIY (fry bed, skateboard bed etc.), I prefer to leave the actual crafting to professionals, or at least people that have more patience than me. The couple of DIY projects I did myself in the home were revamping the desk in the skateboard room (a deal I found on Facebook Marketplace) to reflect the metal aesthetic of a skatepark, spray-painting the antler chandelier in my office pink because it had to be well, pink, cutting down a large king size foam mattress with an electric bread knife to make the fries and painting my grandparents old TV stand I inherited to match the dining room. All of these projects were relatively inexpensive and could easily be done in a rental."
