This Cozy Off-Grid Cabin Will Have You Craving Fall Vibes
Designer Stephanie Smith says that when this two-bedroom, off-grid house in Lake Toxaway, North Carolina was originally built, “its sole purpose was a vacation hunting shack.” The cabin is surrounded by nature, on a beautiful wooded 15-acre lot, and big windows look out onto trees and wildlife.

When Stephanie and her husband, Scott Smith, purchased the house two and a half years ago, they made the necessary changes to make it comfortable and function for the daily needs of their family, which includes 7-year-old daughter, Layla, and dogs, Penny and Michael.
“The goal was to be able to walk in, and not feel like you are missing anything from a traditional home… to actually forget that you are in an off-grid home,” Stephanie writes.
Inside the home, natural wood walls and ceilings contrast nicely with dark paint colors and dark furnishings, and bright pops of green plants are sprinkled around each room. Stephanie Smith is the owner and head designer at Steph Home, a full-service design firm that creates “spaces that truly serve their occupants lives.”
