Bertie Ocampo, who leads event marketing for a North American tech company, immediately fell in love with her current apartment when she first toured it in 2021.

After a two-year search, which mainly resulted in smaller one-bedroom or studio apartments for her budget, she landed on “the one” while browsing through listings online.

“The living room was massive, it had two bedrooms (which was perfect because I could turn the other bedroom into an office, as I work from home full-time), and even came with an extra study,” Ocampo writes.

Ocampo was also intrigued by the building’s history; it used to be an office space before it was broken into two-bedroom apartments. The property’s history isn’t only a fun fact, but also a reason for the larger square footage, she notes.

Ocampo advises gets design inspiration from "Instagram, Interior Design books (some of my favorite ones are published by Rizzoli and Monocle) and Pinterest (I currently have 752 pins saved under my “Apartment inspo” board). But I also get a lot of inspiration from films and TV shows." Some favorite TV spaces are: Kathleen Kelly’s Brownstone apartment in "You’ve Got Mail"; The Perlman's Italian Villa in "Call Me By Your Name"; Lena Waithe and Naomi Ackie’s cottage in "Master of None"; Arnold Shortman’s bedroom in "Hey Arnold!"; The hotel in "The Grand Budapest Hotel"; and the office in "The French Dispatch."

It wasn’t just the ample space that drew her in, but also the seemingly cosmic timing. She’d already planned a week off work to have a staycation at her apartment. After the home’s listing popped up, she toured it on Saturday and signed by the following Wednesday.

"Edit your stuff out first, before you buy any storage. The stuff you have should dictate how much storage you need, not the other way around. Otherwise, you’re going to end up purchasing more items just for the sake of filling up your storage," Ocampo advises.

“When I went back to work the following Monday, my colleagues were shocked when I said I managed to purchase a property in less than seven days,” Ocampo explains. “It had happened very quickly because of all the prep I was doing over the past two years.”

And Ocampo didn’t just plan to purchase the home — she also thought a lot about how to decorate it. She created a YouTube playlist called “Future Apartment,” curated a Pinterest board with over 700 pins, and pulled inspiration from specific spaces in movies.

“Ultimately, I just want to surround myself with things that I love. It was less about what style I wanted to achieve, but more how I wanted my space to make me feel,” Ocampo says. “I wanted my space to feel cozy, inviting, ‘homey,’ inspiring, and deeply personal.”
