Evelyne Klerx runs two stores in the city of Tilburg, The Netherlands — one is a secondhand clothing store and the is other, a pre-owned bridal dress store. So when it came to considering a countryside farm she found for sale, which had been on the market for four years, she went out to have a look first before telling her husband, Matthijs.

“I couldn’t tell my husband yet as I had to make sure I could live out of the city — I knew he would fall in love with the idea so I needed to make sure I could, too. Once I saw the space and the potential I had to go for it,” she explains. Thankfully, her commute into the city of Tilburg is only 15 minutes, and she and Matthijs have created a fantastic, albeit untraditional, home for themselves, their twin 20-year-old boys, two cats, and two pigs (that live outside and in their own barn).

The farm that Evelyne and Matthijs purchased four years ago came with a farm house, but the couple sold it to Matthijs’ parents in order to fund the renovation and conversion of an old 969-square-foot barn. “It’s taken us four years so far,” Evelyne writes. “We love to renovate and as my husband is a carpenter, he is very handy and can do everything himself.”

The barn and farm is still a work in progress; no bedrooms were photographed for this tour because the three bedrooms upstairs are still being worked on, but you can follow along with their continued renovations on their home’s Instagram account.
