Although the “it” color of Small/Cool NYC this year is black, another color is giving ebony a run for its money. Like black, Behr’s Breezeway is able to be a bold statement or a neutral accent in a room.

The Behr 2022 Color of the Year, Breezeway, is a “relaxed and uplifting sea glass green” that “naturally harmonizes with shades of white, gray, and natural wood tones for effortless style in any room,” according to Behr’s website. You can see it at Small/Cool 2022 in Kyle Ortiz’s and Jordan Ferney’s spaces below.

Subtle Seafoam

In Jordan Ferney’s space, Happy@Home, the blogger/designer used Breezeway on the back corner bookshelf and the trim. Here the color is more of a neutral — the perfect not-too-boring shade to breathe calm into the pattern-filled space. “The way I see it, you can mix and match as many patterns or materials as, you want,” Ferney says of the look she’s created.

“You don’t have to settle for how a piece is packaged in the store,” says Ferney. “You can paint it any color you want.” Next time you’re looking to paint an old wooden piece of furniture, consider this calm-yet-still-interesting shade.

Seaglass Statement

In Kyle Ortiz’s Small/Cool bedroom, California Cool, the color leans more, well, colorful. Because Breezeway’s cool tones directly complement the warmer shades of the cane storage, leather bench, and velvet headboard, it pops more.

To make an even larger statement with the color, Kyle added a bit of texture with vertical wood paneling to “anchor the room and create a fun focal point,” he says, proving that Breezeway also looks great on beadboard, shiplap, or the paneling of your choice.

In both rooms, the shade maintains a sense of light and airiness, plays well with warm gold tones, and looks great with plants. No wonder it’s a 2022 color of the year! Bring on the wood and cane furniture, autumn-toned velvets, leafy greens, and cool, breezy walls.
