All Black Walls Make This 700-Square-Foot NYC Apartment Feel Like a “Vampiric Grotto”
Seven years ago, an unlucky situation might’ve been the catalyst that pushed artist and photographer Aviv Grimm to move into her then-boyfriend, Tom’s, 700-square-foot apartment in Lower Manhattan. However, in hindsight, it was a fortunate twist of fate.

Moving into the one-bedroom apartment in the same building that Tom grew up in was a happy accident for many reasons. Tom became her husband (they are also pet parents of two cats, Binx and Sadist), and Aviv transformed the apartment to reflect the couple more.
“It was one of those perfectly-timed chance life events,” Aviv shares. “When I moved in, the apartment was in what can best be described as punk bachelor disarray. For example, in lieu of normal furniture, my husband had something like seven dressers. By luck (and love), he allowed me complete freedom to transform the space into whatever I wished.”
Even though it’s a rental apartment, Aviv has transformed the “plain and uninspiring” space, as she describes it, by painting the walls in Benjamin Moore’s “Graphite,” revamping their ceiling tiles, updating the kitchen, and hanging wainscoting in the living room.
Aviv admits that even though she’s spent likely years reimagining the apartment, she’ll continue to tinker throughout their time there. However, she describes their home as a “Victorian, ornate, maximalist, dark vampiric grotto of sorts.”
