Being in my mid-20s, I can say that I have loved and lost. I understand the pain of trying to make a relationship work that just isn’t meant to be. I am familiar with the exhausting trial and error period of dating around, searching for an ideal mate. I’m talking, of course, about candles. Over the years I’m gotten serious with a few—every fall, for instance, I come crawling back to the Boulangerie Sweet Vanilla Cinnamon candle, and I will always fondly remember my first love, Anthropologie’s iconic Volcano scent. But I’ve found it difficult to find a candle I can enjoy long-term, through the hot days of summer and snowy nights of winter. That’s why I need to talk about one brand I’ve recently become enamored with: Outdoor Fellow.

Founded in 2018, Outdoor Fellow specializes in, well, outdoorsy scents. I discovered the brand a few months ago while browsing Nordstrom, and was struck by how often their candles are sold out. What could make these candles so appealing? Since then, I’ve become acquainted with three of their scents in particular: Pepper + Orange, Forest Rain, and Spring Meadow, and I can confirm that they are kind of fabulous.

My favorite of the bunch is Pepper + Orange. I’ve always been a sucker for sandalwood (yes, I am guilty of burning Le Labo Santal 26 in my home), but I’ve never smelled a candle quite like this one. Combining sandalwood with black pepper and sweet orange, the result is an uplifting, spicy scent that isn’t overpowering. It’s honestly a bit… sensual? The spicy notes make it a nice complement for hot days, but that same quality means that it suits colder days, too. Depending on the day, it can make you feel invigorated and happy, or warm and cozy. It’s a rare shape-shifter candle that works all year round, and I never wish to part from it.

Both Forest Rain and Spring Meadow and ideal choices for this time of year, and both of them were featured in our roundup of the best spring candles. Unsurprisingly, they’re lovely floral scents—both feature musk, bergamot, and oakmoss. Forest Rain smells very clean and a bit earthier than Spring Meadow, which combines lavender, bergamot, geranium, and gardenia. You’ll definitely want to avoid Spring Meadow if you’re sensitive to floral scents, but Forest Rain is less overpowering and a bit more soothing. There are also plenty of other scents to try out, including the newly released Green Grass candle and the classic (and often sold out) Cedarwood + Lavender.

In addition to just smelling really good, I also love how minimal the packaging is. Not only is the label simple and unfussy, but the vessel itself is a glass jar with a heavy bottom—perfect for reusing when the candle is out. Personally, I’m planning on turning my candles into bathroom toiletry jars, but you could pretty much use them for anything.

And I haven’t even gotten to the best part yet: Because we love Outdoor Fellow so much, AT readers get an exclusive 20 percent discount through the rest of May. Just use code ATHOME at checkout, and you can bring home your new candle for less!
