It’s no secret that oversized art has taken off in the last couple of years. A well-chosen piece can tie a room together, and it’s an easy way to elevate your decor. However, if you’ve ever shopped for oversized art, you know it can get pricey fast. Luckily, a popular hack on TikTok might be able to solve that problem.

Cara Newhart (@caranewhart) decided that she was going to save some money and opted to DIY her very own oversized art piece. To start, she decided to use an item that many skip when they’re thinking about art: A shower curtain!

When you really think about it, it makes sense — shower curtains often incorporate wonderful illustrations and colors, they’re cheap, and, of course, they offer plenty of choices. Cara picked a pretty abstract patterned shower curtain — she suggests buying a new one, but “you do you” — then made a frame out of 1x2s. She then attaches all the corners together to make the frame by drilling pocket holes, although she says you can also use braces. She then lays down her shower curtain and wraps it around the frame, and proceeds to staple it to the frame until all the sides and corners are attached. Voilà! You have a piece of oversized art. For an extra touch, she suggests adding a frame with a lattice. From the variations she shows, you can see that this is a versatile hack that can work for all kinds of decor and with all kinds of frames — even outdoors!

Of course, this hack does require a few tools and a bit of handy know-how. If you already have oversized art (or don’t have the bandwidth for doing this hack more than once) you might want to consider a gallery wall, which looks just as lovely but requires less DIY time.
