Eric Drozd, who’s been running his design business, Drozd Design, for three years, says he sold his last home “on a whim, knowing I was ready for my next project. This condo is in the heart of Park Ridge, a close suburb to Chicago. It’s a great neighborhood, and when I saw this place, I knew it had the elements I needed to make it cool for me,” he writes.

Architectural elements like the “high, concrete ceilings, exposed ducts and electrical, and overall lofty vibe” were what appealed to Eric the most about the 1,100-square-foot, two-bedroom space. “For me, this space is perfect, and ideally located to walk to my gym, local bars and groceries, etc.,” he writes.

Though there were characteristics that attracted Eric to the space, there were others that weren’t so sexy. Built in the 2000s, he describes the condo as a “typical 2006 development: Maple floors, cherry cabinets, granite counters, tan colored bathrooms. So little character!”

To make the space feel like his, Eric gutted the entire apartment! “Nothing about builder-grade finishes excited me, so I wanted to make sure I injected my own character into the space,” he writes. “I replaced all the floors, renovated the kitchen and both bathrooms, added an obscene amount of decorative lighting, added the brick fireplace, replaced all trim, and painted the entire place. My goal was to make this feel like an industrial loft, not a new-build condo.”

“I love to travel and collect things when I do. From vintage sconces sourced at the Paris flea market to art found on the Costa Brava in Spain, I’ve been gathering items to display in my home for years,” Eric writes. “I love to mix my vintage finds with industrial and contemporary items for a cool mix that feels lived in, but never stuffy. The color palette is deep and sultry, with deep navys, greens, browns, and wine tones throughout.”
