I’m Copying This Tiny Kitchen’s Pegboard Trick
Whether it’s putting a paper towel holder in a closet, getting storage from a ceiling-installed curtain rod, or even hanging a quilt in the bathroom, it’s safe to say there’s an endless supply of ways to use utilitarian items in seemingly unusual places. Well, Jackie Cantwell, who once rented this colorful Brooklyn apartment, has another useful placement to throw in the hat.
Jackie’s 400-square-foot apartment is featured in the video above, and as she walks viewers through her space, it becomes clear she had to get creative with storage — especially kitchenware. Her solution is not only practical but it’s gorgeous, too.
A Pegboard Gives Tiny Kitchens Much More Storage Space
A pegboard is usually found in a garage storing tools or in a craft area displaying art supplies, but not in Jackie’s home. In her tiny kitchen, which looks as though it has only around seven cabinets, a pegboard on the opposing wall holds kitchen utensils. For example, a colander, can opener, and pot lid are all nicely slung from pegs.
In fact, it seems as though more and more people are using this item in rooms other than the garage. Apartment Therapy’s email editor, Carolyn Moore, says that she cut 20 minutes off of her morning routine thanks to hanging a pegboard by her front door.
Pegboards give you multiple benefits, especially if you’re living in a small space. Not only do they use vertical storage, but it also makes it easier to grab commonly used items. As someone who lives in a small apartment, my husband and I joke that we feel like we’re often dancing around the kitchen while cooking because we’re reaching here and there for our supplies. I can see how a pegboard would simplify the process.
If you’re looking to grab one of these for your home, Lowe’s has a brown option for sale. It’s only $14 and spans 23.875 inches wide x 47.75 inches high. This find has an almost five-star rating and is commonly praised for its practicality. “Great price and functionality! Finally I can see what I have and find things quickly,” shopper Shantizi wrote in an online review.
Brown might not work with your kitchen’s color palette, though. If not, consider IKEA’s SKÅDIS pegboard, which comes in white, brown, and black. The largest version (30×22-inches) is a bit more expensive than the Lowe’s version, but it comes in three sizes, so you can adjust to your price point and available space.
If you have a small kitchen, consider adding a pegboard to the space. It’ll make cooking easier and remind you not to buy that extra potlid (you already have one!).
