“We were first drawn to our home for its mid-century style and the fact that it was a one-floor ranch style,” begins Lauren Driscoll, a wedding and boudoir photographer based in Southeastern Pennsylvania. She and her husband, Mark McIlvaine, purchased this 1,739-square-foot house four years ago, and are only the second owners.

“The original owner was a local builder who built our home and a number of others. We love that we could frame the original blueprints for the house and display them in our living room as an homage to the house’s history,” Driscoll shares.

The couple says that the biggest challenges they faced after purchasing the home were the renovations they had to do before moving in. “The roof needed to be replaced and the septic system needed to be repaired. We fixed these issues on our own and with the help of family, and continue to put our energy into new projects,” she writes.

The couple shares their home with Amelia the cat.

So when it came to decorating the home, Driscoll says she looks for things that “are functional but also bring me joy and inspiration. That way when styling our space we can display items that may otherwise be put away and maintain a connection to our pieces.”

She says they also try buy most of their decor from either local shops or thrift stores. “This keeps things within budget and also gives our home a unique feel,” she admits.

Driscoll acknowledges that filling a home with mostly thrift store finds can take more time than other forms of shopping. “My best advice I can give for thrifting and antiquing is to always have patience!” she suggests. “Not every thrifting trip is going to be a success and I am a firm believer that the things that are meant to be will be.”
