Phillip and his partner Darien live in a luxury high rise apartment building in Downtown Brooklyn. “I hate to admit this, but we could never go back,” Darien laughed when talking about the perks of living in this space. The airy apartment features high ceilings, modern finishes, and amazing views of Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The two have been together for about four years after meeting on a dating app the night before Phillip was to begin a dating detox for a story he was writing. Darien was supposed to be Phillip’s last hurrah. The story was never written.

At the time of our photo shoot, Phillip worked at Teen Vogue. He has since announced he’ll be the new editor-in-chief of Out Magazine. And it’s clear his work in the publishing world has influenced the style of his home; it’s trendy and light with pop culture references all over.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: I’d say mid-century modern but somehow that feels pretentious.

Inspiration: Your Instagram account [@apartmenttherapy]! (Seriously—we send images from your Instagram to each other via DM.)

Favorite Element: Our orange tabby cats.

Biggest Challenge: Renting in a brand-new building has its pros and cons! But our biggest cons are the gigantic, cumbersome doors and the unattractive light fixtures.

What Friends Say: “Oh, Phill decorated.”

Biggest Embarrassment: The litter box.

Proudest DIY: Well, we didn’t DIY but we hired our friend Chella Man to do a mural on our ugly-ass accordion closet doors and now we love our closet! It’s a big accomplishment for homosexuals to have fond feelings of closets!

Biggest Indulgence: Chanel pillow. (It was a gift, but I’m still a little wary of it!)

Best Advice: It doesn’t matter if you’re renting—just make your place feel like a home, and everything else will somehow fall into place.

Dream Sources: Apartment Therapy, Homepolish, Clever!
