This Horticulturist’s Small Melbourne Home Is as Delightfully Plant-Filled and Green as You’d Expect
Name: Thomas Denning, his partner, and their dog, Tina
Location: Melbourne, Australia
Size: 592 square feet
Years lived in: 3.5 months
Thomas and his partner recently moved into this two-bedroom, 592-square-foot apartment with their dog, Tina. Not only did they outfit their small home with all of their furniture and things in the few short months they’ve lived here, they somehow managed to transport AND find space for Thomas’ incredibly large and diverse collection of indoor plants.

Thomas is a horticulturalist, working at Fitzroy Nursery, where he cares for indoor plants, maintenance, and garden construction. With the apartment situated on the second story of a building with views into the surrounding trees, their home is incredibly calming, like being in a serene indoor jungle.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
My Style: Generally speaking, I like a mix of mid-century style pieces worked in with a ton of plants and more neutral tones. In my head, my style leans towards minimalism, but I tend to be a bit of a bower bird by nature so that very quickly goes out the window.
Inspiration: It comes from many places; I find Instagram a great resource of inspiration because there are so many fantastic designers and artists on there to source products and get advice from. My work tends to be quite creative so I get a lot of ideas through helping people create their perfect jungles.
Favorite Element: Plants, definitely plants! They soften and add life to a space more than any other pieces. I wouldn’t be able to live in a home without any greenery.
Biggest Challenge: Having too many plants is a great thing but can also be a bit of a challenge. Watering over the warmer months can be a bit overwhelming at times so I tend to break it up into sections and do some each day to make it more manageable.
Proudest DIY: I would have to say creating and maintaining all my indoor/outdoor plants would have to be my proudest DIY or putting together any IKEA products I have bought without losing my mind.
Biggest Indulgence: Artwork would have to be my biggest indulgence; there are so many talented artists in Australia that produce amazing pieces. I can’t wait for the day I have a bigger place to fill with some larger scale pieces.
Best Advice: Your home is so personal and the place where you spend a large portion of time. So, it’s well worth taking the time to create a warm welcoming space filled with things you love no matter how big or small it is.
