When you’re faced with filling up a blank wall in your home with something interesting, your first idea is probably some sort of art or gallery wall. But take it from TikTok user Shay (@shayleeglaziner) — greenery may be the only thing you need to liven up that blank wall space (literally).

In a January TikTok video, Shay shows how she created her “living wall” installation in her home. “They’re like art. They’re so beautiful and they’re also purposeful,” Shay says in the video.

The first thing you’ll need is a plant that shoots out vines. Think pothos, any kind of traditional ivy, or, as Shay is using, a rhaphidophora tetrasperma (mini monstera). You may already have one of these plants in your collection, and if so, now is the time to repot if you have been putting this process off. Doing this now will save you the hassle of having to work around the trellis during a repot later down the road.

Shay then installs the trellis on her wall. She uses an accordion-style wooden trellis that can be found on Amazon. This one is made from willow branches.

Using standard hooks that can be screwed into the wall (or you can opt for removable Command-style hooks if you’re living in a rental space), Shay attaches the trellis to the wall, positioning the folding pieces as evenly as possible.

And once the trellis is up on the wall, it’s time to weave the plant through the open spaces. Alternatively, you can secure branches to the trellis using plant tape, just to get it positioned for it to begin to grow naturally between the trellis pieces. As your plant keeps growing, your living wall will become more lush and even more of a conversation starter. Gallery wall who?
