Leslie Stephens had just started looking for a house when she walked into this one. “I had been living in a studio apartment following a divorce, and the apartment felt very temporary — I craved a home where I could start a new chapter and put down roots,” begins Leslie, who writes the “Morning Person,” a popular culture newsletter.

"I bought the marigold couch for my living room the week I closed on my house, before I even moved in," Leslie begins. "It was on sale for 30% off and took 12-weeks to deliver, so I took some measurement estimates and went for it. At first, I thought I’d made a terrible mistake — the couch is huge and overwhelmed the room in the initial layout I had in mind. As soon as I tucked it into the corner, though, it opened up the space and I’ve loved it ever since!"

“The house checked all my logistical boxes, and then some: It was small enough for one person, but large enough to grow into, well-maintained, had a backyard for my dog (with fruit trees!), a garage and fence (both of which make me feel safer, as a single woman), and a kitchen that opened into the living room,” Leslie continues.

The meditation set in the corner of Leslie's bedroom is from Walden.

“I had some trepidation about the neighborhood, since it’s in an area in Portland I’ve never lived in and is about 20 minutes away from where most of my friends live, but I’m getting to know it better every day. Most of my neighbors have been here for 20-plus years, and there are gorgeous parks and trails a short run away. My mom often says, ‘Bloom where you’re planted,’ and I can feel myself blooming the longer I spend in this home,” Leslie explains. And bloom she has! Her debut novel, You’re Safe Here, published earlier this summer.
