As an Apartment Therapy editor, I’ve tried out a ton of bedding in an effort to ensure that you know what’s worth bringing into your home space. From pillows to mattress protectors (yes, you should get one!), I’ve seen some of the best and the worst. One of my favorite types of bedding to cozy up with is a quilt. I’ve always especially loved patchwork quilts. To me, they’re the epitome of a classic comfort that never goes out of style, especially if they’re homemade.

Years ago, my best friend’s mom gifted me a quilt she made and I cherish it to this day. So when I had the opportunity to try the Lassen Handcrafted Quilt from Pottery Barn for our Best List series, I couldn’t resist jumping at the chance. It even won Best Patchwork Quilt two years in a row. What I didn’t expect was that after I finished my round of Best List testing, my dad “borrowed” it, and I never got it back. It’s on his bed all the time now! Read on to find out why we both love it.

What Is the Lassen Handcrafted Quilt?

Pottery Barn’s rustic Lassen Handcrafted Quilt is modeled after traditional patchwork bed coverings but with a modern spin. It features a color palette of blues, browns, reds, and white with vintage-inspired patterns and polka dots that are hand-stitched side-by-side to form a colorful, yet cohesive design. The reversible quilt can even be flipped to the other side to showcase a blue-and-white pinstripe motif that maintains its boxy stitching and texture.

The Lassen quilt comes in two sizes — Full/Queen and King/Cali King — with matching pillow shams are also available. Its shell is made from 100% cotton, and it’s filled with 100% polyester batting that insulates and keeps you warm. The quilt is machine washable in warm water and should be tumble dried on low.

Why I Love the Lassen Handcrafted Quilt

If you’re a fan of farmhouse charm, the Lassen Handcrafted Quilt certainly fits the aesthetic. Upon seeing it up close, I was instantly drawn to the hand-stitched details of each strip of fabric that reminded me of old Southern homes I frequently visited as a child. I love it as an extra bedding layer in the cooler months, but it’s also lightweight enough to leave it out year-round to use as a decorative accent, an alternative to a comforter during warmer temperatures, or even as a throw blanket. It’s soft to the touch, and I’m pretty sure it’s gotten softer in the two years that I’ve had it. This quilt just gets better with time.

To my dad, the Lassen Handcrafted Quilt is essentially the Goldilocks of his collection of bedspreads. “It’s not too thin and not too thick. It’s just right,” he says. “And it’s warm, but not too hot.” He also likes that it’s low-maintenance enough to wash it right at home. With the stark contrasts between our tastes in everything from storage solutions to bed frames, it’s not every day that my dad and I actually agree on home design ideas. But I can say, without a doubt, that Pottery Barn is where we find many happy mediums.

Buy: Lassen Handcrafted Quilt, Full/Queen, $209 (normally $299)
