Let’s be real, everyone has killed at least one beloved houseplant. Sometimes it’s forgetfulness, and other times it’s because you gave them a little too much attention. If you have ADHD like I do, inattentiveness and task initiation can impact even your most cherished hobbies… including tending to your plants.

The aesthetics of indoor plants can’t be beat, not to mention their mental health and mood-enhancing benefits. Whether it’s their role in helping improve air quality or clearing your head, it makes sense that the popularity of these potted friends has sprouted up over the years.

Since receiving my ADHD diagnosis, I’ve managed to care for roughly 40 plants that are (at the time of this writing, anyway) doing quite well. Ultimately, it’s as simple as ensuring they have enough light, water, and the environment they need without too much of a good thing.

Each plant has unique needs, and considering how life tends to get in the way, plant care can be challenging. Along the way, I’ve learned a few tricks and discovered some products for maintaining the conditions they need — from fiddle-leaf figs to cacti.

Before you give up and buy some artificial alternatives, read on. I’m going to share a few of these finds to help anyone become a pro plant parent, for those who have ADHD and those who relate to our struggles.

Miracle-Gro Indoor Plant Food Spikes

The time between rounds of fertilizing can vary, which is even harder to keep track of than watering. For a simple way to give your plants a couple of months’ worth of nutrients, these long-lasting plant food sticks do the trick. There’s no mixing or measuring required and they’re inexpensive, too.

Cotswold Homeware Co Plant Watering Globes

If your watering schedule is, uh… not a schedule, try watering globes for a decorative solution. Though you’ll still need to refill them at some point, these devices allow your plants to drink at their own pace. Plus, you can identify when they need their (less frequent) attention with a quick glance. This seller includes a free moisture meter, too.

RAINPOINT WiFi Automatic Watering System

If you’re into gadgets, take your watering to the next level with this techy solution. This drip irrigation kit allows you to set up a fully-automatic process that proves there really is an app for everything.

Govee WiFi Thermometer and Hygrometer

Check out this smart home hygrometer if you’re into tech solutions for monitoring temperature and humidity. This device will let you know when it’s been particularly dry (which may call for watering) or when you may want to adjust the thermostat — all with a helpful push notification.

JLENOVEG Digital Indoor Thermometer and Hygrometer

Here’s one simple way to manage your indoor environment for an optimal plant experience. Attach these magnetized devices that measure temperature and humidity levels to the side of a plant stand or metal pot, or prop them up nearby for an accurate reading right where your plants hang out.

GooingTop LED Grow Light

If you have less-than-ideal sunlight, consider these grow lights with auto-off timers. With the full range of light your plants need, these clamp onto a desk or table, perfect for your home office or the office-office.

Plant Care Journal

Many ADHDers swear by their planners, and this one helps to keep track of plant care. Keep a pen and this log book nearby for quick reference. You’ll never wonder when you last fertilized your Monstera, and you can even track the growth of your ZZ plant.
