Before and After: Wait Until You See What This Target Headboard Turns Into
What can you turn a headboard into? Here’s a hint: this decadent blush velvet, channel-seam headboard is leaving the boudoir for the cuisine…
I love everything about this: the fantastic floor, the black-and-white base palette, the luscious green, mustard, and blush accents, the enviable bistro vibe, the elegant storage in the benches, and the visionary decision to use a headboard to create a comfy yet glam breakfast nook. The space is playful, creative, and fabulous but totally livable—even with kids.
Tara Dawkins—@taradawkinsdesign on Instagram—has two little kids, and therefore designed this breakfast nook with them in mind:
We really wanted to create a breakfast nook seating area where we could eat together and do art projects. We considered custom built-in benches, but ultimately decided to keep it simple (and more affordable) with two IKEA benches (great for organizing kids’ art supplies!). I REALLY wanted velvet channel seam upholstery to be a part of this little set up (to make it feel like a cozy retro-modern cafe booth), but didn’t feel like I had the time or energy to DIY anything. I thought and thought about it, then one day it hit me—a HEADBOARD! I spotted this velvet blush cutie on Target.com a while back. I did some measuring and discovered that the full size headboard fit perfectly in the space. It not only looks great, but it’s comfortable to lean against, and is holding up really well.
Since these photos were taken, we’ve added black Sunbrella cushions on top of the benches for extra comfort and to fill that little gap between the bench and headboard. Sunbrella = kid-friendly/easy to clean!
If you like the look of this nook and you have the right-sized wall, you should know that the headboard is currently 20 percent off in all sizes and colors. And of course, let us know about it if you do.
I am obviously enamored with this breakfast nook, and can’t imagine how darling it must look with little ones at the table:
It makes me so happy when I look over at my kids coloring in this corner nook. I also love the color combo of emerald/mustard/blush; it really pops against the high-contrast black and white elements.
Thank you, Tara Dawkins!
