This Couple Painted Their Kitchen Cabinets White, and Reddit Had So Many Opinions
If you’ve spent most of 2020 staring at your kitchen and looking for a way to upgrade it, the cabinets are a good place to start. There are tips on how to redo them, how to paint them properly, and—last but certainly not least—what color to pick. One Redditor decided to paint their kitchen cabinets white, and what was clearly meant to be shared as inspiration for others turned into a thread of advice and opinions real fast.
The Redditor posted about their project in the r/HomeImprovement channel, which is a subreddit “dedicated to helping people looking for advice on personal home improvement projects,” according to the group description. In an effort to do so, the user posted about how their wife wanted to paint their wooden kitchen cabinets white and that they successfully executed the project on a budget. While the DIY was something to be proud of, the majority of the community took issue with the paint choice.
The OP posted a link that showed before and after photos, and once other users saw the original wooden cabinets, many started to question why they even bothered painting them.
u/rauben27 commented that the white paint actually created more problems because it nows clashes with the rest of the kitchen. “I normally always prefer white, but I almost think you could’ve re-stained these cabinets and you would’ve had a new look,” they wrote. “I guess maybe you need to do some painting to make the white match, you have a lot of earth colors which matched the brown better.”
With that being the most upvoted comment in the thread, it’s safe to say that many of the other Redditors agreed. User beaute-brune wrote, “You did a lovely job but respectfully, I wish people weren’t so eager to do white cabinets. They don’t match the rest of your kitchen. Earth tones are perfectly okay and white doesn’t actually match everything.”
However, there were some Redditors in the OP’s corner. Some vocalized that white was the right choice, but that a few tasks still needed to be done in the kitchen before the project was complete. One Redditor suggested replacing the knobs with new handles and adding some sort of backsplash to tie the room together. Other suggested painting the walls more of a cool tone to avoid clashing with the white cabinets.
Moral of the story: if you want to paint your cabinets a certain color, go for it! Just know there’s a chance that you might have to change the rest of the kitchen as a result.
