My husband and I bought our 1930s Cape Cod-style home in Schenectady, New York in the fall of 2017. We share the home with our four daughters and two Boston terriers, Beau and Bennie. After a long three-year search for the right home we immediately fell in love. There was so much potential in the dated home. While the beige walls, pink bathroom, and yellow kitchen would have to go, we loved the idea of making the home our own style while maintaining the original character.

My Style: I would say my style tends to lean more towards mid-century. I am also really loving moody colors and tones lately and slowly adding more of them to each room through decorative accents and artwork.

Inspiration: I often find inspiration through my favorite designers and home design accounts on social media.

Favorite Element: I love all of the natural light each room in our home gets throughout the day.

Biggest Challenge: The biggest challenge in design and layout has been working with all of the large windows and steam radiators. Additionally, with it being an older home, the rooms are smaller than new builds and there are not as many options for furniture placement. We have had to be very mindful of both the placement and size of each piece that we have brought into our home. It has helped me to become more patient, take my time with each space, and be more intentional with my purchases.

Proudest DIY: My proudest (and biggest) DIY is our kitchen. It truly was a labor of love. Everything from the planning to design and construction was DIY and it really tested us and our skill set. It came out better than we could have hoped and couldn’t be more proud of what we accomplished.

Biggest Indulgence: I can’t say we indulge in much but when we are picking out pieces for our home, whether it be small decorative items or large furniture/appliance items, we buy based on quality, even if it means sometimes spending a little more.

Best Advice: You don’t need a grand budget to create a space that you love.
