When beauty editor Dianna Mazzone Singh moved into a modern apartment in Manhattan’s Soho neighborhood, she was met with a challenge many renters face: making the apartment feel like it reflected her and her husband’s style without making permanent changes. However, finding temporary ways to personalize the space was exciting.

“Name a renter-friendly hack, and we’ve probably tried it! We used peel-and-stick tiles on our kitchen backsplash and applied peel-and-stick wallpaper in both the bathroom and bedroom,” Singh wrote at the time of the tour.

Because they couldn’t make any permanent changes, this meant Singh was always on the hunt for renter-friendly tips. So, when she stumbled across a TikTok hack for hanging sconces without actually wiring them, she immediately sent it to Andrew, a New York City-based handyman assisting with updates.

The trick was purchasing traditional sconces, removing the wiring, and installing them on either side of the bed. In place of the wiring, Singh purchased puck lights from Amazon (these are similar!) and popped them into the sconces.

“These faux sconces add a bit more of a bespoke look but didn’t require any demo other than drilling a hole into the wall,” Singh shared via email.

But what made these lights extra special (besides being renter-friendly) was that they came with a remote that not only turns the light fixtures on and off with a press of a button, but also adjusts the brightness and color. It makes life easier while changing the vibe of the space.

“The remote control is super handy! There’s nothing worse than having to shuffle over to a light switch that’s across the room once you’re already settled in bed,” Singh explains.

The remote-controlled, temporary lights have kept Singh in good graces with her landlord but also lessened the chances of bumping into things in the darkness after switching off the lights. Plus, the lights make a big difference for a minimal cost (the two-pack of the bulbs cost less than $20).
