This Scottish Island with Its Own Lighthouse Can Be Yours for $421,000

The bad news is that $421,000 isn’t usually enough to buy you an apartment in places like New York and London. The good news is that, in Scotland, the same amount can buy you your own private island.

Pladda, an island off the coast of western Scotland, can now become anyone’s remote hideaway, as it is currently on the market for £350,000 (or about $421,000). The 28-acre property features stunning views of the Firth of Clyde, grounds teeming with more than 100 bird species, its own lighthouse, and a five-bedroom lightkeeper’s cottage.

As mentioned, the location is off-grid. To reach the island, you’ll have to travel via boat or helicopter, which means going to the local pub and back will be quite the effort. In fact, the nearest village, Kildonan, is a 15-minute boat ride away.

And, similar to actual lighthouse keepers, you’ll have to do a bit maintenance work since the accommodation has been vacant for years and is in need of remodeling. There’s no electricity on the island, so you might want to invest in renewables like solar or wind.

No need to worry about the lighthouse itself, though, as the Northern Light Board, based in Edinburgh, can operate it remotely.

According to Tom Stewart-Moore of listing brokerage Knight Frank, this is a rare opportunity to own an even rarer kind of property. “It has been on the market for a short time and has achieved TV, radio and social media exposure around the globe.”
