They ripped out carpets, removed the old kitchen (which Collette says they found a mouse nest in!), redid the bathroom (which she says was leaking everywhere), and finally, they “painted every surface in sight.”

“We are using it for a couple’s retreat; there is no TV to encourage play and connection! We have board games, chess, card games, a library to read in, an outdoor bath for two, and a double hammock. No excuses to not reconnect as a couple,” Collette explains.

In order to achieve their goal of a “colorful, vintage, eclectic, and relaxing” atmosphere, they used “a lot of thrifted and vintage goods” as well as incorporated a ton of color, pattern, texture, “and, of course, plants.”

Although there are a number of delightful elements worth pointing out in the cottage, Collette calls special attention to her favorite room, the kitchen, because it has a yellow floor and an orange fridge and is an “inspiring and just a joyful space to be in.” She also loves the kitchen for the wall that features a collection of vintage plates, which she says the “effect is wonderful and so interesting.”

And when it comes to giving design advice, Collette says you should have a “strong and clear vision for how you want the place to feel, but be ready to be flexible as the house tells you what will actually work and what won’t.”
