Lucia and Jose are partners in work, life, and love. The wedding filmmakers, who got married last year, own the business Ankerprod, and also live together in this compact home they renovated themselves.
Having been renters for some time, two years ago they began their search to buy the home of their dreams… which turned out to be a difficult task. They were looking for beautiful light, a good location, and a place with a lot of character, and weren’t initially finding everything on their list. It definitely wasn’t love at first sight when they came across this old apartment, which was in a terrible condition. The couple could see its potential, though, and took a chance.
Lucia and Jose were very hands on for the home’s renovation, tackling everything from deciding on a new layout of the rooms, to also choosing the building materials and furnishings. But though the space has plenty of modern vibes, the couple didn’t want everything to be new.
Vintage elements are an important part of their home; they were originally looking to buy a home with architectural character, after all. They were able to incorporate plenty of older details with vintage furniture and accessories. And the apartment’s old bones–now highlighted after the renovation–add plenty of old-world charm.
Apartment Therapy Survey:
Our Style: We didn’t want “to marry” any particular style. What we really like is to merge different styles, decades, and objects to create a place that fit with us and our personality. We like some rustic elements but then we absolutely love mid-century furniture. So let’s say we have an eclectic style.
Inspiration: We love to buy interior design magazines. But also are lovers of Pinterest and take some inspiration from Airbnb houses when we travel the world. We love old things and history. So sometimes we take some inspiration from older times.
Favorite Element: It’s difficult for us to pick just one. But if we have to… then definitely it’s the Franciscó Moltó pic we have hanging in the entrance. But we also really love some other pieces that are gifts and personal objects we’ve collected for years.
Biggest Challenge: Everything! The renovation was really challenging for us. The house was in ruins and we didn’t have a lot of help so everything was made by us and the builder. So it was really hard at the time but now we are happy to do it.
What Friends Say: Friends love it. We are really good cooks so we love to cook dinners or breakfast for them and have a good time with them at our big table.
Biggest Embarrassment: We don’t have any embarrassments for the moment! We really love every part of the house.
Proudest DIY: Removing the woodworm from the kitchen table with Jose’s aunty and their cousins. Was really fun working all together and it’s a great memory for us.
Biggest Indulgence: We would love to buy a house on a more calm street. This is a big avenue so when the windows are open you can hear the traffic. That’s why we installed really good windows. When we close them and we can’t hear anything. That’s perfect!
Best Advice: To be calm and enjoy the process! With renovations you never know what’s going to happened and it’s going to be more expensive than expected but in the end it’s definitely worth it.
