Have you been eyeing a sofa at Crate & Barrel but can’t make it into one of their locations to test it out for yourself? Or maybe you have a few contenders on your list, but need help narrowing them down? That’s where the Apartment Therapy Sofa Squad comes in.

We had eight of our editors hit up C&B (as well as four other stores) to couch surf through all 20 models on the floor of the retailer’s SoHo location, taking note of vital sofa-buying criteria: How deep is it? How firm is it on a scale of 1 to 5? Could I lay here all day (maybe even catch a few Zzz)? Some of our testers were tall, some were short (and many in between) with very different preferences. All their scores were averaged to give each sofa an overall rating. And there was a clear favorite that far and away out-comforted the others. Read on to get the scoop.

A little info about Crate & Barrel:

With a factory in North Carolina, the majority of their sofas are made stateside (of both domestic and imported materials). You’re likely to find sturdy kiln-dried certified sustainable hardwood frames on their seating, which means a product that won’t warp or easily break, as well as a sofa made of responsible materials.

Testers’ Thoughts

It’s outrageously deep (I’ve had guests use it as a bed without complaints), but I can cocoon into the soft corner of this for hours…for better or for worse. The tweedy fabric hides all kinds of sins. I can see some people having an issue with back support, but I just stack my plethora of pillows behind me whenever necessary.” – Arlyn Hernandez
