Name: Mitzie Wong and Jenifer Herrmann
Location: DUMBO — Brooklyn, NYC
Size: 1,050 square feet
Years lived in: 1 year, owned

If you are a fan of stunning modern furniture and decor, you’ve almost certainly seen Mitzie Wong’s design work. She co-founded Roar + Rabbit, a creative firm specializing in furniture and decor, with Wendy Wurtzburger in 2015, and worked as Design Director for Anthropologie Home before that. Roar + Rabbit—known for its collaboration with West Elm—is responsible for (what is in my opinion) the perfect lounge chair, the Pleated Swivel Chair, which features a body-hugging, elegantly sloping, sumptuously cushioned shape perched upon four elegant metal legs. It’s a piece of furniture that’s at once functional and incredibly beautiful to look at, just like the Brooklyn home Mitzie shares with her partner Jenifer Herrmann.

The couple bought this two bedroom, two-bathroom home in DUMBO last year, and contacted Sweeten, the service that matches renovators with general contractors, to help them remodel the space. Working off of Mitzie’s sketches and mood boards (of which you can see—along with before photos—in their Sweeten blog post), the scope of the renovation ended up including a total kitchen gut renovation, a gut reno of both bathrooms, new flooring, new lighting, and an overall paint job. But while the aesthetic focus was on creating a modern space that would reflect both the women’s personalities, it was also important that the space work efficiently, especially since Mitzie works from home. Smart storage shows up in many places in the home, but her office was done particularly well.

“I am an avid traveler, and I also work from home,” says Mitzie. “My office is a collection of memories, books textiles, artwork, and objects from both work and personal trips. It was important that I keep all my art materials, travel memorabilia, and ever-growing collection of plants contained in one place.”

Beyond just being a dreamy place that houses some of my favorite Roar + Rabbit furniture pieces ever, Mitzie and Jenifer’s home is also inspiring because it features bold design elements that grab attention and add interest, while the overall feeling of the home is a welcoming space that relaxes and calms.

Apartment Therapy Survey:

Our Style: Casual, Modern, sophisticated.

Inspiration: Calming feeling with mixed materials and textures.

Favorite Element: The calmness in the apartment. Also, I really enjoy all the craftsmanship that went into the renovation.

Biggest Challenge: Staying on budget.

What Friends Say: They love the overall renovation, especially the colors and material choices but more importantly to me, they love that the apartment feels inviting and relaxed.

Biggest Embarrassment: Blowing the budget!

Proudest DIY: The concealed bathroom storage using my specs.

Biggest Indulgence: The hand-printed gold foil wallpaper in the entryway and the hand-made tiles used in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Best Advice: Create mood/vision boards at the very beginning of the project (CAD renderings are best). Hide all electrical wires and TV cables through walls and ceilings if possible. Visit a stone yard to select your kitchen countertops.
