With Spring Cleaning for Your Mood, we’re helping you get your housekeeping done no matter what state of mind you’re in. For 20 weekdays in April, we’ll focus on cleaning a new area of your space, with three different ways to get it done—so it’s easy to stay on track even when you’re busy, tired, or away from home. Sign up with your email now and enjoy a better space by the end of the month.

Home should be a comfortable place to perch. And while “comfort” doesn’t explicitly mean carpet, that’s where my mind travels anyway. A soft layer of rug or carpet under my feet sure makes me feel more comfortable at home—especially when it’s feeling fresh and clean.

If it’s been a minute since you gave your fluffy flooring some love, today’s the day to jump in.

Day 12 Assignment: Rugs & Carpet

You probably already got the living room rug cleaned on day five, but now’s the time to get a little work done throughout the rest of your space.

So what are you in the mood for today?

A Satisfying Deep Dive: Deep clean your soft flooring.

What you do today depends on the anatomy of your home.

  • If you’ve got wall-to-wall carpet, make an appointment (with a professional, or just yourself) to have it shampooed and cleaned one day soon.
  • If you have rugs, shake them out really well, vacuum them from the top, then the bottom, then the top again. If you think any of your rugs are soiled enough and need shampooing, make a plan to take them to a cleaner, or clean them yourself at home.

A Quick Win: Vacuum and spot treat.

For a quick once-over type of clean, start by vacuuming your rugs or carpet. You can do this like you would during your routine cleaning, but try to pay attention to the rug or carpet as you pull and push over each swath. If you see any stains that missed detection, or sections that could use trimming or shaving or any other type of hands-on attention, take care of it today.

A Mindful Reset: Think about your clean home habits.

Cleaner floors begin at the door. With your mindful minute today, I’d love for you to reflect on your home habits, specifically what happens at the door to your home. Are people taking off their shoes? Is the doormat and rug doing a good job of dislodging outside dirt? Are you walking outside to take out the trash in your “inside” shoes? You don’t have to treat your entryway like an operating room, nor do you have to be a shoes-off home if you don’t want to. But try to mentally walk through a typical day and examine how dirt is getting in, and potentially tracked across your floors. Then consider what you can change to keep your home cleaner from here on out.
