Vacuuming has never been my favorite chore. It’s not that I mind cleaning — I actually love a freshly vacuumed house — but I’ve always found the process surprisingly physical. Lugging a heavy vacuum around furniture, swapping attachments to clean baseboards and ceilings, and wrestling with bulky hoses has always made it feel like more work than it should.

That’s why I was genuinely excited to try the new Shark PowerDetect Transformer. The promise of one vacuum that quickly transforms between an upright, stick vacuum, and handheld sounded almost too good to be true. After putting it to work throughout my home (which includes plenty of hardwood floors and area rugs that seem to collect endless dust and pet hair from my two dogs), I came away more impressed than I expected.

The Design Features That Stood Out Most

The biggest difference between this vacuum and every other upright vacuum I’ve owned is how effortlessly it changes jobs. With a single click, I could go from vacuuming our living room rug to cleaning behind furniture or along the ceiling without feeling like I was stopping to reconfigure an entire machine.

I especially appreciated that the handheld mode doesn’t feel like an afterthought. It’s powerful enough for real everyday cleaning, but light enough that reaching high corners or running along baseboards didn’t leave my arms aching. Shark also eliminated the bulky hose that’s common on many uprights, which makes the whole system feel much sleeker and easier to maneuver. Another feature I unexpectedly loved was the built-in reveal light. It sounds simple, but seeing every little speck of dust illuminated on hardwood floors is oddly satisfying — and impossible to ignore once you’ve experienced it. It’s the brightest light I’ve seen on a vacuum yet.

How It Performed in My Home

This is one of those products that actually made me clean longer than I normally would — not because I had to, but because it was surprisingly enjoyable to use. The upright mode delivered plenty of power on my area rugs, which take a beating from two dogs and collect dust faster than I’d like to admit. But what really impressed me was how seamlessly I could switch into handheld mode to clean furniture, corners, stairs, and baseboards without interrupting my rhythm. It felt like I was cleaning the entire room instead of just the floor. I turned on my go-to playlist and got lost in the hum of the clean.

The vacuum is also incredibly easy to steer. It almost feels like it wants to go where you’re guiding it, instead of fighting against you. I found myself moving from room to room with very little effort. (My favorite way to clean.) I also loved that I didn’t have to think about changing settings. The vacuum automatically recognized when I moved between our hardwood floors and area rugs, adjusting on its own so I could simply keep cleaning.

What we love

  • Incredibly easy to maneuver
  • Three useful cleaning modes in one machine
  • Powerful pickup on rugs and hard floors
  • Automatic floor detection works seamlessly
  • Reveal light makes hidden dust easy to spot

Good to know

  • It's a premium-priced vacuum.
  • The transformer design offers the most value if you'll regularly use all three modes rather than only vacuuming floors.
  • The full-size upright still takes up about the same storage footprint as a traditional upright.

Should You Buy the Shark PowerDetect Transformer?

If you’re someone who dreads vacuuming because it feels cumbersome, this is exactly the kind of product that can change your routine. It has already transformed mine. I especially think it’s worth considering for pet owners or anyone who regularly switches between rugs, hardwood floors, stairs, upholstery, and above-floor cleaning.

What impressed me most wasn’t any one feature; it was how naturally everything worked together. I never felt like I was compromising power to gain convenience, and I never found myself avoiding those harder-to-reach spots because switching modes took only seconds. By the end of my first afternoon testing it, I’d vacuumed my living room, dining room, and bedroom … and then vacuumed several of those rooms again simply because I enjoyed using it. That’s probably the strongest endorsement I can give a vacuum.
