The Completely Clear, Floating “Sky Pool” Opens in London This Month
If you’re afraid of heights, then just don’t look down while you’re doing your breaststroke. But then again, that would defeat the whole point of Sky Pool, the first-ever floating swimming pool suspended 115 feet above the ground at London’s Embassy Gardens apartments. Opening to residents of the apartment complex on May 19, Sky Pool may just be the most terrifying yet utterly cool thing to experience—that is, if you’re brave enough to take a dip.
According to Architectural Digest, Sky Pool is an “82-foot heated oasis” suspended in acrylic between the two roofs of Embassy Gardens’ Legacy buildings. The pool, which was conceptualized in response to not having enough room to build a large enough roof pool atop either one of the Legacy buildings, was crafted in Colorado, then transported to Texas, where it was then loaded onto a cargo ship to take a three-week long journey to its final resting spot in London.
CNN reports that residents brave enough to paddle into the 10-feet-deep completely-clear swim zone will get views of the London Eye and Westminster. Embassy Gardens is also located just south of the Thames river and next to the U.S. Embassy.
The acrylic sides of the pool are 200 millimeters (7.8 inches) thick with a 300-millimeter-thick (11.8 inches) clear acrylic bottom. Each end of the pool is anchored safely in the flat roof of each Legacy building, leaving about 40 meters open to the sky.
Filtration and lighting was built into the end sections of Sky Pool, which means, yes, you can take a night swim, which may be even more mind-blowing than taking a dip during the day.
As of right now, only residents of Embassy Gardens luxury apartments (which start in the million dollar range) will be able to use Sky Pool. The grand opening on May 19 will be hosted by DJ Roman Kemp and will feature a performance by the synchronized swimming team Aquabatix.
