Miquel‘s apartment in Barcelona’s Eixample neighborhood has quite a family history. It was bought by Miquel’s grandfather, who passed it to his son, Miquel’s dad. Although the apartment was in the family for awhile, no one in the family actually ever lived in it until Miquel; it was always rented out.

Originally a three-bedroom apartment, Miquel asked his father to rent it out to him and it’s now his home. But Miquel needed to make a few changes to the space for himself and his roommates, two cats named Micho and Midori.

“Because it is my lifetime apartment, I decided to renovate it completely, along with SOMOS NIDO (a company that specializes in this); we reshaped it into a one-bedroom apartment,” writes Miquel.

“I am a world traveler and we created a cozy space, which has all the feeling of some of my preferred hotel rooms but while being homey,” he writes about the main goal of the renovation, which lasted eight months and involved taking down a lot of walls and rebuilding all the spaces to fit the desired one-bedroom layout.

“The apartment layout is done to completely match my daily routine at home and my likes. There’s a changing room just near the entry door, a high table in the kitchen, an isolated bedroom, an open living room and kitchen, and a hidden area used as a pantry and washing room.”

SOMOS NIDO arranged all the interior design of the space, as well as had a hand in choosing the art, and impressively, worked the renovation mostly while Miquel was either traveling or visiting family away from Barcelona, but Miquel says that being away had no adverse effect on the home’s reno. “The process was very smooth for me, making decisions about colors, textures, materials, furniture, and art by email and videocalls, and onsite visits during my Barcelona stays,” he admits.

“Since day one after the renovation, I have felt my apartment is an extension of me, and that it captures my personality. Family and friends visiting say it reflects me,” he writes. “It is homey, cozy to the max. That’s what we were looking for and that’s what I feel in it.”
