Big News: The Small/Cool Contest is Officially Back

For the last few years, our readers have made their message loud and clear: bring back Apartment Therapy’s Small/Cool contest. And so we did—starting today! Small/Cool 2020 is officially here. If this is the first you’re hearing of Small/Cool, here’s a quick rundown: anyone with a small home (aka 1,000 square feet or less) that has innovative, cool, or creative ideas can enter photos and information about their home for a chance to win up to $4,000. Even if you don’t enter, you can check out all of the small, cool homes and vote on your favorites! See the full contest page here for more information.

The submission period for the Small/Cool contest opens up Fri., April 3, and will run until Fri., April 24. That means you have three weeks to get your submission ready to enter (just make sure not to wait too long!). Voting will start May 4. The whole contest is in partnership with the Behr Paint company.

To enter, fill out the form here to tell us about what makes your space small and cool. You’ll also need to enter six photos that illustrate your space, including a layout (again, by popular demand). The contest works like this:

  1. You submit your entry by 3 p.m. eastern on April 24.
  2. Our team of Apartment Therapy judges will screen your entries to decide whether or not they move on to the next round of voting. We’ll be evaluating design, smart ideas, photo quality, and writing.
  3. Voting starts on Mon., May 4. Entries will be broken out into four brackets: Small: (751-1,000 square feet), Smaller (501-740 square feet), Tiny (251-500 square feet), and Teeny Tiny (250 square feet or less). A new bracket will open every Monday in May and stay open until the following Monday. Each bracket will have a winner based on the popular vote. Every bracket winner will receive $1,000.
  4. The four finalists will move on to the next round, where our panel of expert judges will select the grand prize winner (who will get an additional $3,000 and a lifetime of bragging rights).

We will announce the grand prize winner on Mon., June 8.
