We first got a glimpse into the colorful world of Troy Solomon (a.k.a. ABearNamedTroy) and Ian Mofford when we toured their whimsical West Hollywood apartment last year. Since then, the couple has transformed their drab second story patio into an equally magical wonderland laced with astroturf and pops of pink. The result is a satisfying transformation that begs the question: Why can’t we all be outside drinking piña coladas from disco balls right now?

Before the makeover, their narrow balcony boasted views of the adorable palm tree-lined West Hollywood street below, but its stained concrete floor and drab stucco walls made it less than inspiring. (Ian referred to the old balcony as “sad and scary,” comparing it to “Grey Gardens.”) Wanting to take advantage of the constant sunshine and beautiful outdoor scenery around them, the two decided to design a space they both loved.

Before purchasing furniture and accessories, the two put together a mood board to ensure a seamless process. Being renters on a budget, it was also important that all of the elements were temporary.

Pink was an obvious accent choice, as it brought out the blush hues already found in the beige stucco. They covered up the dingy concrete with removable TrafficMASTER astro turf—the vibrant green perfectly complements the pops of pink.

Lightweight lounge chairs from Article are the perfect combo of comfort and compactness in the small space, and incandescent string lights were an easy and affordable way to add mood lighting at night.

To finish it off, Ian and Troy used existing accessories from inside their home, adding fun and functionality via sparkly disco cocktail mugs and other colorful decor.

Thank you Troy and Ian!
