A Private Rooftop Helps a 344-Square-Foot Apartment Feel Much Larger
“I was desperate to move out of a dungeon of an apartment I had moved into in Rushcutters Bay; I must have inspected it in the one hour of natural daylight it had and needed to break out and find some sunshine,” explains Charlotte Ree, of her last living situation.

So, she checked realestate.com.au every day until she came across this apartment for rent. “The New York loft style is what immediately caught my eye, but the private rooftop stole my heart,” she explains. “I was lucky that inspections took place in the thick of Sydney’s second lockdown and so, I wasn’t competing or rushing when I went to view it — it was just me, there, swept up in my hopes and dreams. I could see myself living in that apartment and so it became not a question of if, but when. I was a woman on a mission.”
Ree has now been renting this 344-square-foot apartment for two years, and while the inside of the home is tiny, the private rooftop offers up nearly 430 square feet of additional living space.
Charlotte Ree has worked in book publishing, and is currently the head of marketing at a big publisher in Australia. In May, she published her memoir, Heartbake, which “documents her journey to self-love following divorce and the unmistakable role food has played in her life, and how cooking has ultimately healed her.”
