SMEG Adds Even More Appliances That Are Actual Works of Art
It’s Design Week in Milan and SMEG and Dolce & Gabbana are back with even more appliances turned art. If you thought the fridges were extra, just wait until you have a hand painted oven and range hood to match.
The collection, called Sicily Is My Love, started as an exhibit at Milan Design Week in 2016. The fashion brand enlisted artists to paint traditional imagery on one hundred of the appliance maker’s hugely popular retro style refrigerators. Normally a statement piece on their own, the SMEGs featuring homages to the Sicilian carretto garnered a ton of international attention. In fact, Neiman Marcus started selling the one of a kind pieces in October 2017—for $50,000 a pop.
Last year, the line expanded into small kitchen appliances such as a tea kettle, toaster, and citrus juicer, also available at Neiman Marcus for the much lower but still luxury price of $600 each.
Now, the Italian brands are back again with additional appliances and a new color scheme. If your artistic fridge is looking out of place with a normal stainless or single-hued oven, we have good news: SMEG’s Victoria range and hood are also getting the splashy Sicilia treatment. And if all these reds and oranges aren’t your vibe, there’s a new hue based on traditional Italian pottery in a crisp blue and white.
The small appliances are expanding as well; on display at the Milan Furniture Fair are a hand blender, coffee machine, and a four-slice toaster; a press release states that a full blender, espresso machine, stand mixer, and slow juicer are also in the works.
