Spain Just Announced A Digital Nomad Visa For Remote Workers

As remote work continues to transform the workplace, more and more workers have found the freedom to do their jobs from anywhere, no office needed. Unsurprisingly, many employees have now chosen to see the world in between Zoom calls. If you’ve been yearning to try out a new country, good news — Spain is officially launching a “digital nomad” visa aimed at remote workers, allowing visitors to work there for up to one year.

From historic cities like Barcelona and Madrid to the gorgeous beaches of Mallorca and Ibiza, it’s easy to see why the country is an ideal home away from home. In fact, Valencia, Spain was voted as the No. 1 city for expats to live and work abroad in 2022, according to an InterNations survey. Another plus? Spain is generally cheaper than other western European countries, so you won’t have to break the bank to live abroad.

This particular visa is specifically targeted at people who are fully employed but work remotely, freelancers, and people who make at least 80 percent of their income from non-Spanish companies.

According to Time Out, to qualify, you’ll need to meet the minimum income requirement of around €2,000 (a.k.a. $2,110) per month. Although the digital nomad visa will be valid for up to a year, Global Citizens Solutions reports that you can stay even longer by applying for temporary residence. This option allows you to renew your digital nomad visa for up to five years.

Of course, Spain is hardly the only country to woo laptop owners with the promise of digital nomad visas. Since 2020, at least 30 countries have launched some kind of visa tailored at remote workers, including the Bahamas, Portugal, Croatia, Mexico, and Costa Rica.
