Spring is in full swing following the vernal equinox on March 20, which launched us headfirst into a new season and a new astrological year. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, temperatures are officially warming up. If you garden, you’re probably thinking about what flowers, crops, or herbs you want to grow this year.

As an astrologer and plant lover myself, might I suggest using your zodiac sign for some gardening inspo? Whether you’re new to gardening, stumped on what to plant this year, or simply in the mood to switch things up, exploring the unique traits of your sun sign can point you toward plants you’ll actually enjoy growing or harvesting.

Below, find spring gardening suggestions tailored to each of the 12 zodiac signs. Take what resonates, and compost the rest (pun fully intended).

Aries: Bee Balm

As the name suggests, bee balm is a magnet for pollinating insects, who love to snack on its bold, nectar-rich flowers. It grows rapidly, mirroring your sign’s fast pace and fighting spirit, and it naturally deters deer and rabbits from your garden. Plant this sun-loving perennial in the spring for blooms that burst with color in the summer and fall.

Taurus: Gardenias

Ruled by Venus, your sign is all about beauty and sensory pleasures, which is why you’ll gravitate toward gardenias. This springtime standout features creamy-white flowers that smell incredible and feel velvety-soft to the touch. Gardenias fare best in shady spots and work particularly well as hedge or container plants. Pick some up to complete your spring garden, patio, or backyard landscaping.

Gemini: Blanket Flowers

What better spring plant for the twins of the zodiac than a multicolored flower? Blanket flowers’ blooms have crimson petals with yellow-tinged rims. They’re playful and distinctive, just like your sign. You can start blanket flower seeds indoors while it’s still chilly outside, or wait until frost is no longer in the forecast and sow them directly in your garden.

Cancer: Mint

An edible herb that’s super handy in the kitchen, mint is a great pick for compassionate Cancers — your sign is predisposed to nourish and care for the people you love. This hardy plant will come back year after year. It spreads fast, though, so consider growing it in containers to keep it under control. For optimal flavor, snip those fragrant mint leaves right before the plant flowers.

Leo: Marigolds

Known for their iconic golden blooms, marigolds thrive in sunny spots — not unlike how your sign exudes charisma and shines in the spotlight. This low-maintenance spring flower adds a cheery pop of color that’s ideal for garden borders or containers. Plant it from seed, or purchase some pre-grown marigolds from your local nursery.

Virgo: Butterhead Lettuce

As a Virgo, you think practically, which is why you’ll enjoy planting butterhead lettuce in your garden. This versatile crop grows easily and quickly. The real question to ponder is how to use it up in your spring and summer cooking. Grow butterhead lettuce in containers that get indirect light, and eat its tender, vitamin-rich leaves within a week of harvesting.

Libra: Zinnias

Eye-catching zinnias perfectly suit you, Libra; you’re an air sign known for your charm and artistic flair. This fuss-free annual comes in a variety of cheerful colors and produces excellent cut flowers for your home. Plant zinnias in a sunny patch in your garden, and prepare to watch them bloom throughout the summer and into the fall. Pro tip: Prune old flowers on your zinnias to encourage a new round of growth.

Scorpio: Hellebores

Between their dark color palette and visual interest throughout the changing seasons, hellebores will instantly appeal to moody Scorpios. Your sign is closely associated with nature’s death-rebirth cycles. Planting hellebores in early spring allows them to establish strong roots while the weather is still cool. These plants take 2 to 3 years to blossom from seedlings and 1 to 2 years if you start with a young potted plant, but once they mature, you’ll be rewarded with gorgeous, rose-like blooms.

Sagittarius: Encore Azaleas

Unlike traditional azaleas, encore azaleas rebloom multiple times throughout their growing season. These showy flowers are a great pick for consistent color, and a no-brainer for an optimistic, larger-than-life personality like yours, Sag. They’ll even attract butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden. Grow encore azaleas in full sun or partial shade, and prune them immediately after the first round of springtime flowers.

Capricorn: Golden Ragwort

You’re a hard worker, Capricorn, which is why you’ll gravitate toward golden ragwort. This durable woodland herb makes a great ground cover plant that’s easy on the eyes. It flowers in the spring and retains its dense, emerald-green foliage even in the winter. Golden ragwort thrives in shady, moist environments, so it’s best to grow it in soil that’s damp or wet.

Aquarius: Yarrow

As an Aquarius, you care about how your choices impact the collective. You’ll appreciate the ecological benefits and healing properties of yarrow, a perennial plant that’s native to North America and has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb. Its dainty flowers attract pollinators and ward off pests — really, there’s no downside to growing it. Plant yarrow in well-draining soil after the last anticipated frost in your area.

Pisces: Bleeding Hearts

These whimsical, heart-shaped pink and white flowers are a perfect match for you, the zodiac’s tender-hearted romantic. Early spring is the ideal time to plant them in your garden. Since bleeding hearts are perennials, they’ll regrow for many seasons to come, heralding the return of warm weather each year with their delicate blooms. And oh, would you look at that — Pisces is also the sign that transitions us out of winter and into spring. How poetic!
