I Transformed My “Sterile” Kitchen into a Colorful, Happy Oasis — It’s Renter-Friendly!
My kitchen was once a blank canvas, an uninspiring white-walled space when I moved in. Although the space was brand-new, it lacked the warmth, personality, and soul I wanted to surround myself with.
I bought my apartment and moved in in July 2022, and from that very first day, I knew that every inch of the room would need to feel like me, which would take time, effort, and a lot of love — but I was up for the challenge.
My Apartment Kitchen Became My Opportunity to Design a Space
Although I studied interior design, I never actually worked in the field. My career has always been in construction, where I learned a lot about the technical side of spaces, but I never had the chance to design and decorate a home of my own from start to finish. This apartment became that long-awaited opportunity, a dream I had held on to for years, to finally create a space that reflected my personality, creativity, and everything I love about design.
I Wanted to Add Warmth and Playfulness to My Apartment
Starting with the basics, I wanted to add warmth and character, so I played with color and contrast. After trying a few different ideas — like white patterned wallpaper — I finally found the perfect balance: olive-green walls (Valspar’s “Crocodile Smile”) paired with pink stick-on tiles, navy matte cabinets, and crisp white countertops. The combination felt bold yet harmonious, fresh, cheerful, and full of life.
The green brings a sense of calm, while the pink adds a playful touch, and the blue grounds everything beautifully. Together, they transformed the kitchen from a plain, sterile space into a bright, inviting room that truly feels like me.
My Favorite Corner Is the Window Nook — Even My Dogs Loves It
One of my favorite corners is the small window nook I created. It’s a little sanctuary where sunlight pours in, plants thrive along the edges, and I can enjoy a peaceful moment with my morning coffee. Twinkling lights and small decorative touches give it a magical, almost secret garden quality. This is also where my chihuahuas love to sunbathe on a soft cushion while I cook, which makes the space feel even more alive and personal.
The vibe of my kitchen isn’t just about color — it’s in the details. Every element, from the carefully chosen tiles to the placement of the shelves, was selected to be functional and inspiring. I wanted a kitchen that works beautifully for daily life but also sparks joy and creativity.
All of My DIYs Reflect What I Love and Who I Am
Even though I only spent around $1,100 on the makeover, the transformation feels so much more valuable. Doing all the work myself, from painting to tiling, assembling furniture to styling plants, made the process deeply personal.
Now, the kitchen is a reflection of everything I love: pastel pinks, sleek surfaces, and thoughtful design touches that make cooking feel like a creative experience. It’s both practical and fabulous, a space where I can entertain, relax, and feel totally at home.
