I think about pillows more than the average person thanks to my role as Apartment Therapy’s Commerce Editor. I certainly didn’t expect bedding to be my beat, but I’m definitely not complaining—especially since it turns out there are many, many options out there. I wish I could go back and tell 19-year-old me that no, not all pillows are created equal, and also no, that pillow you grabbed out of a random bin at Bed Bath & Beyond is not going to be comfortable. Alas—character building! Anyway, yes, I have made it my mission to test pillows of all varieties, and I’ve gathered all of you here today to talk about a new one I recently discovered: the Original Sweetnight Pillow.

I first learned about Sweetnight while doing mattress research, as the brand is first and foremost known for their range of six mattresses. Like many other mattress companies, they also sell pillows—but unlike many of their competitors, Sweetnight’s pillows aren’t just an afterthought. They are fully capable of pulling their own weight, and are good enough to actually stand out in an already bloated market. While there are three different options (the Original, the Bamboo, and the Combination), I tested out the Original, and have some thoughts.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m a hot sleeper. Every single item on my bed is “cooling”, from the linen sheets to the mattress. I’ve found that gel-infused memory foam is the best at keeping you cool when it comes to pillows, and Sweetnight’s pillow is made of just that. To be exact, it’s filled with 90 percent gel-infused foam and 10 percent shredded foam, both of which contribute to the pillow’s overall breathability and comfort. And, yup, I didn’t wake up feeling hot one single time. Another good sign? I typically fall asleep on my side and then end up on my stomach, and was comfortable no matter the position.

Another great feature is that it’s customizable to suit your exact preferences. The pillow arrives with 25 percent extra filling—all you have to do is unzip and take out as much or as little fill as you desire to create your ideal feel. If you’re a back or stomach sleeper you’ll want to remove quite a bit of fill to create a flatter pillow, but if you’re a side sleeper you can go as firm or as soft as you like. I personally like a firmer pillow, so didn’t remove too much fill and was very happy with the results.

Interested in trying Sweetnight’s pillow for yourself? Right now, AT readers get 20 percent off sitewide with code ATSWEETNIGHT20. That includes pillows, mattresses, and toppers, so you can upgrade your entire bed situation for way less. But if you’re looking for suggestions about where to start, go with the Original pillow—it’s well worth the higher price point!
