If you’re a tequila lover, you might know that the agave-based liquor was first invented in Tequila, Mexico—a short drive away from the country’s second-largest city of Guadalajara. What you might not know (and will probably be excited about) is that there is actually a tequila barrel hotel there that you can stay in, literally on the grounds of a distillery. I was lucky to get a chance to stay there courtesy of the Guadalajara Tourism Board.

The Matices Hotel De Barricas is located on the grounds of the La Cofradia Tequilera, where you can spend your day doing tours and tastings or eating at their underground restaurant and bar. It’s perfect for anyone who wants both a unique overnight experience and intends to spend more time in the area of Tequila without having to move far after their day of drinking—who could blame you?

Take your pick of their 30 tequila barrel rooms and four non-tequila barrel rooms, each uniquely named and decorated after a different La Cofridia brand of tequila and surrounded by fields of agave plants. Amenities for each air-conditioned barrel include the classics such as Wi-Fi, a minibar, a television, a private bathroom, and complimentary bath products—but some of the rooms also have access to their own private tequila barrel jacuzzi. The deal is sweetened by the inclusion of a tasting and tour of the distillery, as well as meals and transportation to and from downtown Guadalajara being included in the price of your stay.

Besides touring the distillery, other activities offered include designing your own handmade ceramic tequila bottle, horseback riding, and mountainside hikes to the Volcán de Tequila—an actual extinct stratovolcano in the area that plays a helping hand in fortifying the soil of the tequila-producing agave fields.

According to online booking sites such as Expedia, a stay will cost you around $171 a night, and if you’re not planning a trip to Mexico any time soon, the hotel currently has plans to add 20 more barrel rooms by October, in addition to a pool and barrel spa. If you’re ready to get your tequila on you can visit their website for more information and to book your stay.
