Thanksgiving place setting of gold and white plates with gold napkin and holly. Mini orange pumpkin, dried leaves, and candles on table

Thanksgiving might be one of the most widely celebrated holidays in the U.S. — so why don’t more people decorate for it? Halloween has pumpkins, ghosts, and bats; Christmas has trees, lights, and baubles galore. But most Thanksgiving decor comes down to the table: Turkey, gravy, and pie are the major ways many celebrate. But that might just be changing.

Decorating for Thanksgiving is finally happening in a bigger way, and it’s possible to look beyond the turkey for inspiration. At last, some fresh (feathered) faces are new to town (and on Thanksgiving tables) this year — and, personally, I’m loving this shake-up.

A New Flock of Feathered Friends Are Everywhere This Fall

You heard it here first: Pheasants, quail, and ducks are taking over this Thanksgiving. And I don’t mean on the menu. From decorative plates to salt and pepper shakers, birds of all kinds are popping up on pieces that’ll add a little bit of whimsy to your seasonal decor. It’s the perfect way to add a festive touch to your home without feeling too cliché.

I picked up my own alternative bird friend last season — I snagged this beaded grouse-shaped pillow (pictured above) from John Derian’s holiday collection for Target. I got so many compliments on my little bird buddy last year that I couldn’t wait to bring it out again this fall. So take it from someone who’s already bought into the trend: Whether you’re looking to spice up your own table settings or you need the perfect gift for your Thanksgiving hosts, consider shaking things up with one of these fresh feathered accents.
