“I bought this house right after COVID when the housing marketing was tough to find a good house and for a good price. There just wasn’t enough homes, and you had to go above and beyond the asking price to even be considered. I waited six months!” begins James Bryan, also known as That Halloween Bro (he also has a YouTube channel).

James shares his home with his 3-year-old Boston Terrier, Louie.

“However, a friend of a friend let me know she was selling her townhouse and knew I was looking. I honestly had my doubts because you hear horror stories about townhouses. I went to look, and I immediately was drawn into the open rooms, storage, large backyard, and, of course, how I could deck this place out for Halloween.”

James doesn't keep ALL his Halloween decorations up all year long. "I love the excitement of bringing them out each year and doing something different with them each year. Getting to use them in a different set up always makes them seem like new decorations and how they might fit into a new puzzle," he writes.

“We worked out an amazing deal and one month later, I was a first-time homebuyer. There isn’t really any fun or exciting history behind this place, and it won’t be my forever home, but it makes for one fantastic journey,” James writes. Before he moved in, James says the walls were painted in dark browns, tans, and beiges, and the home was covered in an off-white carpet. James says the carpet was the first thing he got rid of, but he kept one of the room’s wall paint colors. “The one room color I kept was the office. It was this moody dark gray that was perfect for a Halloween-themed office.”

"Renovations are never really budget friendly, but I see the worth in the investment and have no regrets. I made a list and prioritized that list. But even cheap upgrades like a new coat of paint, new curtains, or a rug can REALLY make a difference (and rental friendly). I redid my floors, and lighting, and windows, while that was an expense, you don’t have to go that far. Some people say your house or home is your calling card. Make it your own," James advises.

James didn’t do a ton of remodeling, but definitely put his stamp on the space. “It’s more modern and bright, yet has this brooding darker all year round Halloween feel to it,” James begins. “Before moving I got rid of all the carpet and replaced it with this great aged looking gray plank flooring. I replaced all the lighting with dimmable recessed lighting so I could create a mood or look any time of day or time of the year. I also painted all the walls and tried for each room to have an accent wall. I wanted each room to have an accent wall with unique art or pieces to immediately attract your attention when you entered.”

"Two of my favorite DIY projects are the funhouse sign I made that I still keep up year round in my guest room and these giant groups of candles I made from pool noodles," James writes.

Where exactly does James keep all of his Halloween decor when it’s not out on display? “So I keep all my Halloween decor in my attic that has specially designed shelves for stacking with the roof angle. It keeps everything tidy! I also have an outdoor barn/shed where I put shelving for some of the heavier tubs I don’t want to carry up the attic stairs,” he explains. But this townhome also came with a delightful positive aspect:

“The amount of closets and storage this place has is wild. For a townhouse, it has more closets and space for storage than most houses do and something I appreciate as a Halloween hoarder.”

Thanks, James!
