My husband and I moved into our little house in Des Moines (in a historic area called Beaverdale, full of houses from the ’30s) in July, and were very excited to start bringing some personality into the place! We liked the olive green walls of the living room and dining room, but realized shortly after hanging stuff up that we needed more color in the space.

I built a canvas to fit the space over our buffet and painted a simple abstract in some colors I liked, and we based the rest of the room around that. Nearly all of this room is DIY: the buffet is a restored piece inherited from my grandmother, the credenza is a revamp of an ugly Craigslist find, the table and chairs are both restored hand-me-downs, and the floorcloth is a DIY project. We just hung the copper Sputnik the other day and are really thrilled to walk through here and eat our meals in here every day.
