This Sisal Rug Is the Real MVP of My Apartment, and Here’s Why it Might Be Right for You, Too

I’ve long admired the look of jute and sisal rugs; these natural fiber carpets are the perfect mix of sophisticated and laid-back casualness. I’m all for a vintage Turkish rug from time to time, but jute and sisal rugs just have a chill, inviting quality while still making a space look super-pulled together.

When I was moving into my apartment last summer, I wanted to purchase a jute or sisal rug for my living room. That said, I spend so much time in this space; my living room’s where I enjoy all three meals (I don’t have a dining table, so I eat most of my meals on my couch… I know, I know), go about my work day, and unwind at night. So finding a rug that would be able to hold up to lots of daily use while being easy to clean was of the utmost importance.

In my initial search, many of the natural fiber rugs I was drawn to online had weird crevices that seemed like they would make vacuuming a bit difficult. When you eat in your living room, being able to quickly remove crumbs is essential! Thus, I decided to shift my search for lower-pile options. Even while exploring this subset of rugs (and reading review after review), I began to find that a lot of jutes and sisals on the market shed. If you’ve ever sat down on a carpet while wearing dark jeans or black leggings only to find fibers all over you when you stand up, you’ll understand why even the prettiest rug option just isn’t worthwhile if it sheds easily.

While jute rugs are frequently associated with coastal decor, I think that this one looks wonderful in my “traditional with a twist” living space, if I do say so myself. I get tons of compliments whenever I share pictures of the rug online, and I know that it will continue to hold up wonderfully over time (if my rug can survive a red wine spill or two, it can survive anything). This piece is also cozy underfoot, which can be an issue with some other natural fiber rugs, and the tan colorway reflects light, helping a small space look a little bigger, too.
