I’m sure you’ve heard the not-so-secret rumor that IKEA is transitioning to a new line of kitchen cabinets in 2015 and it’s all true – it’s definitely happening and the new system, called SEKTION, is on its way and will be in US stores soon. I took a trip to IKEA’s HQ and got the scoop on the what, when and why of the switch…

The current well-loved kitchen cabinet, AKURUM was introduced in 1995 and has been the runaway hit of the kitchen design world, with over 7.7 million cabinets sold. Customers rated them “Highest in Customer Satisfaction” in the 2012 and 2014 J.D. Power U.S. Kitchen Cabinet Satisfaction study.
So, why make a switch when you’ve got a good thing going? IKEA’s answer: because they know they can make a good thing even better.
The SEKTION kitchens will be sold in stores starting on February 2, 2015. It’s an iteration on AKURUM that retains all the good stuff from the current line (25 year warranty, colors & finishes, availability, ease of planning and price) and then layers in some new goodies on top.

Some of the features of SEKTION worth noting (and getting excited about): it’s a much more modular system which will make planning even easier and more custom solutions possible, allowing for greater flexibility and creativity to design a kitchen that really works for you and to find clever new ways to use the cabinetry in other rooms of your home. It makes big leaps forward in maximizing the use of the cabinet interior space, features soft close drawers and doors and a new system for integrated lighting will be available. A wall mounted rail system for both upper and lower cabinets is part of the SEKTION system which will make accurate installation even easier and more DIY friendly.
The two systems are not compatible, so it’s not possible to add SEKTION components to an AKURUM system, but IKEA will continue to honor the 25 year warranty on the AKURUM kitchens after SEKTION launches.
And, the bottom line? SEKTION will be comparable in price to AKURUM.
We’ll have the full story with ALL the specifics, photos and details for you just as soon as we can, but for now, we wanted to confirm the story and give you a sneak peek at some of the looks and functionality that the SEKTION will offer. (Note: the images in this post are of the similar European version of SEKTION, called METOD.)
