In a safety notice, the New York-based company wrote: “We have identified the potential presence of elevated levels of bacteria in some of our products that present a safety concern.” They did not specify which specific products might be impacted, but did note, “Based on our investigation to date, we are not aware of any adverse health impacts related to this issue.”
The company is working with their suppliers and will communicate with customers ways to receive reimbursement or replacement products “as soon as possible,” though based on Instagram comments, it seems buyers have plenty of valid questions, such as a specific date range of products impacted and location of products purchased (i.e., are products purchased in other countries — which likely have stricter safety regulations — also a potential danger?).
According to Business of Home, the company’s interim CFO Tohfe Beidas also sent an email out to retailers who carry The Laundress product line, asking them to “immediately cease all sales and distribution” of the brand’s popular products and to “quarantine” the items. They’ve also marked items on their own website as “out of stock,” while their New York City brick-and-mortar store is “temporarily closed.”
It’s unclear whether or not buyers will be asked to discard their existing items, so the company is asking people to hold onto them for now until the brand gives more specific info. They also recommend rewashing any items (including clothing, dishes, and surfaces) that have been cleaned using The Laundress products, particularly for those who have immune concerns or any open wounds. Concerned buyers can also clean their laundry machines for added protection.
