Shopping for furniture online is no easy feat. You want to make sure the investment is worth it, but this can be hard to do based only on product photos and, occasionally, customer reviews. Lucky for you, we visit brick-and-mortar stores for our Personal Shopper series to deliver the details on all of the furniture from your favorite home retailers. This time around, we’re checking out CB2 sofas to help you find the best model for your home.

We stopped by CB2’s 3rd Avenue Manhattan store to check out all the sofas on display. Not only are CB2’s sofas some of the most stylish we’ve ever seen, but we also appreciate the brand’s commitment to sustainable material sourcing and extensive quality testing. Keep reading to learn about the sofas’ specifications and determine which is the one for you.

Why CB2?

Browsing CB2’s offerings online feels akin to looking through a highly curated home inspiration moodboard. CB2 sofas in particular are best characterized as modern, trendy, and well-crafted. The brand also exercises responsible manufacturing practices, using sustainably sourced materials for its products, such as preferred fibers and FSC-certified wood from responsibly managed forests. Additionally, CB2 offers free design services with experts to help you choose pieces that best suit your personal style. You can book an appointment in-store or opt for a virtual consultation if you don’t have a location near you.

The Criteria

We judged CB2 sofas in-store based on the following five criteria to help us determine who the sofa suits best.

  • Seat Firmness: How soft or firm are the seat cushions? How do they contribute to overall posture and comfort?
  • Seat Depth: What posture does the sofa best support? How deep or shallow are the seats?
  • Loungability: Could you spend hours on this sofa? Could you nap on it? And would you want to?
  • Durability: Is the fabric easy to care for and able to withstand everyday use? Does it require frequent upkeep and spot cleaning?
  • Appearance: What style does the sofa best suit? Does it lean more traditional (i.e., rounded lines, tufted cushions, classic silhouettes) or more contemporary (i.e., clean lines, bright hues, modern silhouettes)?

Why You Should Trust Me as a Tester

Every CB2 sofa was tested by AT’s former Shopping Writer, Nikol Slatinska. Nikol has tested and reviewed furniture for the Personal Shopper series since 2022 to help readers find the best pieces for their homes, especially small spaces. From sofas and bed frames to dining tables and accent chairs, she’s covered it all — making her a furniture expert.

Nikol spent the day at the CB2 store in NYC to evaluate the brand’s sofas on their design, durability, and loungeability.

The Best Editor-Tested CB2 Sofas

Best Leather Style: Rodez Sofa

What impressed us: We quickly noticed that most of CB2’s sofas, including the Rodez, have impressively deep seats. This model also wowed us with its inward-curving arms and firm seat. It would make a great replacement for a first sofa that’s on its last legs; we could envision the Rodez in a young adult’s industrial-style loft. Its tan leather upholstery is soft to the touch, so it does scratch easily. As a result, we wouldn’t recommend the sofa for busy households with pets or young children. That being said, the more wear the sofa accumulates, the more personalized it’ll feel in your living space. We viewed it in the 105-inch length, but the 88-inch version would be great for small spaces.

What we love

  • The modern industrial appearance
  • It comes in two sizes
  • The relaxed, deep seats
  • The inward-curving arms

Good to know

  • The leather upholstery scratches easily
  • It has a firm seat

Specifications:

  • Styles: Also available as an 88” sofa
  • Dimensions: 105″ long, 40″ wide, 26.5″ high
  • Seat Depth: 27”
  • Upholstery: 1 option

Best for Small Spaces: Ambroise Sofa

What impressed us: You don’t have to sacrifice style for a small space. The Ambroise is a gorgeous velvet sofa with a compact design. It has a modern silhouette with square arms, a slightly curved back, and blind tufting and welting on the backrest. Right alongside its statement-making look, it has thick and cozy cushions that are as comfortable as they are supportive.

What we love

  • It's small-space friendly
  • It has thick, cozy cushions
  • The vintage-inspired tufting detail
  • The luxe velvet upholstery

Good to know

  • It comes in two sizes
  • It has a medium-firm seat

Specifications:

  • Styles: Also available as a 104” sofa
  • Dimensions: 80″ long, 35.5″ wide, 27.5″ high
  • Seat Depth: 26.5”
  • Upholstery: 62 fabric options and 4 leather options

Best Modular Style: Deseo Modular Corner Sectional

What impressed us: This was the first modular sectional we saw as we made our way around the showroom, and it remains our favorite modular option. The version in the store was actually comprised of one bench module, a corner module, and a short end module as opposed to two benches, but that’s the beauty of the Deseo: There are endless configurations, and you can add on extra modules should you ever need to increase the amount of seating in your living room. Also, we’ve seen a lot of sofas with velvet upholstery, but never in this deep charcoal color, which further makes the Deseo stand out from other models. A low profile, far recline, and plush seats make this armless stunner a nap-worthy pick, too.

What we love

  • The flexible, modular design
  • The relaxed low-profile silhouette
  • The plush seat cushions
  • It's great for lounging

Good to know

  • It has a far recline
  • Getting up might be a struggle

Specifications:

What impressed us: The Lumis looks not unlike the famed Cloud couch, which is a living room classic at this point. It, too, is modular and features the fluffiest cushions out of all the sofas we tested. If you’re renting or working with tight quarters, you might not be able to fit a full five-piece Lumis sectional in your space, so we’d recommend this oversized four-piece model for homeowners, instead. It’s the perfect crash pad, whether you’re hosting movie night, entertaining relatives for the holidays, or just vegging out after a long day. Its cream-colored, linen-like performance fabric was a nice detail, too.

What we love

  • The oversized, cloud-like appearance
  • The flexible, modular design
  • It's ultra-plush and great for lounging
  • The fluffy cushions

Good to know

  • It's too big for small apartments
  • You'll need to regularly fluff the cushions

Specifications:

  • Styles: Also available as an armless chair, a corner chair, and an ottoman
  • Dimensions: 126″ long, 42.5″ wide, 40″ high
  • Ottoman Dimensions: 41” long, 41” wide, 21” high
  • Seat Depth: 31”
  • Upholstery: 70 options

Best for Families: Faible Chaise Sectional

What impressed us: Consider the Faible sectional the Lumis’ streamlined sister. It has the same oversized silhouette and deep seats, but without cushions that’ll need regular fluffing. We think this model is ideal for large families because no one will have to fight over seats, and the upholstery options include a few performance fabrics for easy cleanups. Additionally, the Faible has a spongy, supportive feel, extra-wide arms that practically double as side tables, and a clean design that fits in with a variety of interior decor aesthetics. A store employee informed us that the Faible is CB2’s best-selling couch, and we’re not at all surprised.

What we love

  • The cozy oversized silhouette
  • It's great for families
  • The cushions keep their shape and don't require fluffing
  • The deep seats
  • The extra-wide arms double as side tables

Good to know

  • It has medium-firm seat cushions
  • It also comes in performance fabrics

Specifications:

  • Styles: Also available as a sofa
  • Dimensions: 145″ long, 45″ wide, 29″ high
  • Ottoman Dimensions: 45” long, 45” wide, 18” high
  • Seat Depth: 32”
  • Chaise Width: 90”
  • Upholstery: 66 fabric options, 8 leather options

Best Traditional Style: Marconi Sofa

What impressed us: You’ve likely noticed already that CB2 predominantly caters to modern tastes, so the Marconi naturally stood out to us with its vintage-inspired design. It has a very low profile, but, for once, this sofa’s seats were of a regular depth. Its whiskey-colored upholstery was soft and tufted into a cool argyle pattern along the back and arms. We could smell the leather as we sat on its medium-firm seat, which only added to the sofa’s old-world appeal. The Marconi was actually designed for a classic Milanese restaurant, so adding it to your space will help give your living room a posh, club-like ambience. The sofa’s back is also low and firm, but the included lumbar pillows offer that necessary support. It’s a showpiece, but it’s not wholly impractical.

What we love

  • The vintage, old-world appearance
  • The argyle-patterned tufting
  • It includes lumbar pillows for extra support

Good to know

  • It has a very low profile
  • It has medium-firm seat cushions and a firm back

Best Textured Style: Mylene Bouclé Sofa by Goop

What impressed us: We’ve viewed a lot of bouclé sofas both for this series and outside of it, although none made as lasting of an impression on us as the Mylene sofa. For one, its upholstery was an elegant mix of black and white as opposed to the usual single-tone bouclé. It was also fuzzy and soft, not unlike an expensive wool sweater, although this fabric is made of synthetic materials. The bench seat is of a normal depth, and it is firm but still comfortable. We also liked how the back wrapped all the way around, which only added to the Mylene’s cozy vibes. This sofa is part of CB2’s collaboration with Goop, and the collection is every bit as sophisticated as we’d expect from Gwyneth Paltrow.

What we love

  • The black-and-white bouclé upholstery
  • Its fuzzy, soft texture
  • The cozy curved back
  • Its sophisticated look

Good to know

  • It has a firm bench seat
  • The seat has a standard depth

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 97.25″ long, 39.13″ wide, 29″ high
  • Seat Depth: 23.25”
  • Upholstery: 32 options

Best Cozy Style: Muir Sofa

What impressed us: It’s safe to say that CB2 loves a curved silhouette, and we do too. The Muir is designed by Lawson-Fenning, perfectly blending a retro look with natural elements. It’s upholstered in soft camel-toned velvet and has deep seats that you can curl up in. The velvet color is one of the things that caught our eye initially, but something to note is that it’s not performance fabric. That said, it may not be the best choice for super busy homes, as it’s a little more high-maintenance than others.

What we love

  • The curved silhouette
  • The retro appearance
  • The soft velvet upholstery

Good to know

  • The velvet isn't a performance fabric
  • It has a plush seat

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 90″ long, 43.5″ wide, 28″ high
  • Seat Depth: 26.5”
  • Upholstery: 1 option

Best Statement Maker: Symmetric Sofa

What impressed us: One look at the Symmetric sofa and it’s easy to see why it won the statement-making category. Designed by Paul McCobb, CB2’s take on the iconic sofa has clean lines, a channel-tufted back, and walnut legs. It almost looks sculpturesque with angled arms and luxurious auburn velvet upholstery.

What we love

  • The clean-lined, sculptural silhouette
  • The vintage-inspired channel tufting
  • The luxe velvet upholstery

Good to know

  • It has medium-firm cushions

Specifications:

  • Dimensions: 103″ long, 33.2″ wide, 30″ high
  • Seat Depth: 22.75”
  • Upholstery: 60 fabric options and 3 leather options

Best for WFH: Camden Sofa

What impressed us: If you’re hesitant about the idea of owning a white couch, know that the Camden sofa comes upholstered in white performance fabric that is resistant to fading and stains. The Camden also has a soft and plush bench seat that still manages to offer plenty of support, so you could sit on it for hours without feeling discomfort. Looks-wise, the sofa is impossible to ignore, thanks to its Space Age design. It might be vintage-inspired, but it’ll undoubtedly level up the contemporary aesthetic in your living room.

What we love

  • It's fade- and stain-resistant
  • It has a plush bench seat
  • It looks retro yet contemporary
  • It has an upright seat that's ideal for WFH

Good to know

  • It has a soft seat
  • It comes in two sizes

Specifications:

  • Styles: Also available as an 81” sofa and an accent chair
  • Dimensions: 101″ long, 37″ wide, 31″ high
  • Seat Depth: 23.75”
  • Upholstery: 2 options

Most Luxe Style: Ceva Sofa

What impressed us: The Ceva reminded us of the sprawling sofa in photos of Coco Chanel’s iconic Paris apartment — only the Ceva is upholstered in a mellow blue velvet. Its singular long seat invites you to lie down, while low, wide back cushions provide that touch of support to keep you from completely sinking in. The wide square arms and angular lines prevent the Ceva from looking outdated, as does the tall platform base. At 103 inches long, this model is quite lengthy, but you’ll be happy to learn that it’s also available in an 86-inch sleeper version.

What we love

  • It looks luxe and inviting
  • Wide back cushions keep you from sinking in
  • It's soft yet supportive
  • The wide square arms double as side tables

Good to know

  • It's also available as a 86" sleeper

Specifications:

  • Styles: Also available as a sleeper sofa
  • Dimensions: 103″ long, 38″ wide, 31″ high
  • Seat Depth: 21”
  • Upholstery: 73 options fabric options and 7 leather options

Best for Socializing: Curvo Sofa by Goop

What impressed us: We’ve seen low-budget retailers try and fail to replicate a glam sofa style, but Goop’s Curvo sofa is the real deal. It looks positively lavish without being ostentatious. We credit its smooth woven linen upholstery and fluidly curved back for that. Contrasting metallic legs only add to its allure. Both the seat and backs are quite firm, but you get enough space to spread out. The sofa’s curved shape also lends itself to social hangouts, whether you’re hosting a party or an impromptu gossip sesh.

What we love

  • The glam appearance
  • The chic curved back
  • The luxe linen upholstery and contrasting metallic legs
  • It's roomy enough to sprawl out on
  • It's great for gatherings

Good to know

  • The seat is quite firm
  • It comes in two sizes

Specifications:

  • Styles: Also available as a 75” sofa
  • Dimensions: 96.5″ long, 47.5″ wide, 31.75″ high
  • Seat Depth: 28”
  • Upholstery: 33 options
