For Christmas this year, I decided to update my grandfather’s living room as my present to him. My grandmother passed away last February, and he needed a change – something that he could see everyday that would make him happy to remember his life with her.

They had kept their 1960s furniture in near perfect condition, so I knew I would just need to update the styling of the room with fabrics and some interesting wall art. I have always loved their yellow sofa, and decided to go with an old Hollywood love story theme, incorporating my grandparents into the design.

The overall project took about 20 hours – most of the work went into sewing and repurposing outdated frames. The upholstery fabrics are from a local store called Fabricland, and the gold and black accessories are from Target – a mix of the Nate Berkus line and Beaver Canoe.

The artwork is a compilation of famous Hollywood love stories from the silver screen with gold Sharpie detailing. Adding a photo of my grandparents in to the mix is what made it personal, and now they’re up there with the stars, just where they belong.
