This Polynesian-Inspired Palm Springs Pad Is For Sale
Want to live permanently on island time, but in the middle of the desert? This two bedroom home in Palm Springs really plays up its tiki culture history. Take a look inside.
The 1,289 square foot two bedroom, two bathroom condo is located in Palm Springs’ famed Royal Hawaiian Estates. Commissioned by local real estate developer Phillip Short, the forty unit development was built in 1961 by architects Donald Wexler and Rich Harrison, at the height of America’s obsession with all things tiki (Hawaii became a state in 1959).
The retro culture has seen a resurgence in the past decade as well, with cocktail preferences swinging back toward the tropical flavors of tiki drinks like those from bars such as Smuggler’s Cove in San Francisco and Three Dots and a Dash in Chicago.
The property has been painstakingly restored by the current owners to be an homage to all things Royal Hawaiian, and is often a stop on Modernism week events and visited by connoisseurs of the style (Wexler himself was a friend of the owners, according to the listing). There’s plenty of details for tikiphiles and mid-century purists to ooh and ahh over, including the carved architectural posts and the grasscloth wall coverings to the terrazzo floors (which are conveniently making a comeback) and the original windows.
What does this tiki time capsule cost, you ask? $419,000, which considering its Palm Springs ZIP code and Class I Historic site status, is not a bad deal.
