Tell us a little (or a lot) about your home and the people who live there: I moved into this apartment in the middle of the March 2020 Covid lockdown, so I had to buy the majority of my furniture either through Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. I’m most proud of my West Elm couch I found on Craigslist for a super great deal, and it’s the piece I styled my living room around. My apartment is pretty old, but I love its character and real hard wood floors. I also scored a super great price for the apartment size and my location (only a few blocks from Kitsilano beach in Vancouver, BC), and I’m super close to tons of restaurants and shops.

Because my kitchen is pretty small, I’ve tried to make small changes, such as adding in two kitchen carts and using my convenient spice/paper towel fridge magnet (from Amazon) to add storage and maximize vertical space. Although I’m a terrible cook, I love to bake so having lots of space and storage was important to me. Through decorating this apartment, I’ve learned that I’m in love with wicker, crystals, and (of course) plants. The majority of my decor items have been thrifted (I’m now a Value Village fan), which has saved me a ton of money and has provided me with a new environmentally friendly hobby.

Because I’m currently a graduate student working from home and studying online, I’ve tried to make my apartment a calming and cozy place to be. This is my first apartment living by myself, so it’s been fun decorating and figuring out my decor style.

My family nationality is Indigenous Canadian, which is incorporated into my apartment from the beautiful, hand-carved box in my bedroom (gifted from my Grandma), to the cedar woven tray and basket in my living room. I believe that my passion for wicker, textured and woven items has also been inherited from my grandma and her own beautiful and earthy decor style. My mom is always pushing me to be a minimalist, but I like “stuff” too much.

What is your favorite room and why? My favorite room changes depending on what new decor or furniture I’ve bought. Currently it’s the living room because that’s where I’ve spent most of my time during COVID either studying, in meetings, or watching Netflix.

What’s the last thing you bought (or found!) for your home? My beautiful and soft new chunky knit throw from IKEA.

Any advice for creating a home you love? Don’t rush yourself. Take your time to shop (and thrift) for pieces that you really love.
